Round hand mirror or double folding mirror: how to show the finished haircut

Ronde handspiegel of dubbele vouwspiegel: zo toon je de achterkant van het kapsel

If you want a client to see the back of their head, neckline and sides after a haircut, you need a second mirror working together with the large mirror in front of the chair. A round hand mirror with one handle is straightforward when you move it behind the client's head to display a particular section. A double folding hairdressing mirror has two reflective panels and side handles: consider it if you want to offer different viewing directions during one presentation and fold the tool away afterwards.

We compare two specific Prohaar products: the black round Q-35, SKU 133306, for which the manufacturer gives a 25 cm mirror diameter, and the black double folding mirror, SKU 133307, described with a 21 × 31 cm mirror dimension. The latter number does not establish the exact dimension of each panel or the overall width when fully opened. Both are intended to display the back of a haircut. Neither exact product specification establishes 360-degree rotation, optical magnification or drop-proof glass.

Your choice depends on the workstation and the way you present your work. If you want to position a mirror behind the head with one hand and use the other to indicate a contour, start by considering Q-35. If you prefer to open two reflective surfaces and show transitions between the back and sides at a station with a wall mirror, review the folding version. Rather than buying on words such as 'perfect view' or 'professional finish', consider who holds the mirror, where the client looks and where the item goes after the service.

What should the client see?

Showing a completed haircut involves more than a quick glimpse of the back. With a short fade the client may want to see the transition beneath the crown and around the ears; with longer hair the important details can be the perimeter, the fall of layers and how the left and right sections meet. A second mirror makes these zones visible only when the reflection can actually be followed. Choose your movements according to the haircut rather than using one demonstration for every client.

Start with the relationship between the mirrors. The large mirror in front of the chair remains the client's main viewing surface. The hand mirror catches a view of the back of the head and reflects it toward that front mirror. Adjust its angle until the relevant zone appears. Do not promise an immediate complete all-round view: lighting, head position, hair volume and the distance between the surfaces all change what the customer can see.

Before presenting, ask what needs checking. One client mainly wants to assess the neckline, while another is interested in whether the transition above both ears looks even. Naming a single detail prevents them from searching among several reflections. If needed, invite a small, comfortable turn of the head and stop adjusting when the position becomes awkward. A deeply bent neck is not a prerequisite for explaining the finished style.

Distinguish showing the result from checking the result. A mirror communicates what you have created, but it is not a measuring instrument for symmetry or millimetres, and it does not replace the barber's assessment of balance, shape and outlines. When the client points out something, inspect that area through your normal working process before deciding whether an adjustment is needed.

Q-35 consists of a single round reflective surface, a black frame and a handle below it. The stated diameter of the mirror is 25 cm. You can grip it underneath and move it behind the head, allowing the client to inspect selected areas in the main mirror. Neither the product name nor the manufacturer's description establishes a second mirrored side or a magnifying lens.

The double hairdressing mirror has two panels in a black folding casing with handles on both outer sides. The manufacturer and the current product text give 21 × 31 cm. Without a separate dimension drawing, treat that as the stated mirror dimension, not a guaranteed width for each panel, a folded outer size or the overall width when opened. If it must fit a narrow drawer, precise travel case or reserved wall space, ask for the relevant measurements before purchasing.

These products are not the Q-33 UK, a different mirror with a double-sided design and a flag motif. The word 'double-sided' on Q-33 does not mean the same thing as the two hinged panels in this folding model. How the mirror is held and positioned matters more than similar wording. The previous Q-33 guide covered its handle and construction; this article is about presenting the back and sides using two other tools.

Round mirror: focused views

The round Q-35 lends itself to a simple sequence. Stand behind the chair or slightly to one side, hold the lower handle and find the reflection of the desired part of the haircut in the main mirror. With only one reflective surface, there is no folding angle to manage: you move the entire item instead. When the aim is to display the lower neckline, that tends to be an understandable working method for the client.

For a low taper or sharply outlined neckline, show the centre at the back first and then move a little to the left and right. The difference between those positions matters more than continuously waving the mirror. Pause briefly at each position so the client can inspect the detail. Then ask whether the result corresponds with what was agreed, rather than expecting a generic 'looks fine'.

One handle can leave the other hand free to point to the location of a contour. That does not mean sharp tools should still be in use while you display the mirror. Put scissors and trimmers in their proper place first and present the outcome afterwards. It is a separate stage following cutting, finishing and removal of visible loose hair.

A circular surface does not guarantee a view of the entire head at once. Diameter describes surface size, not the field of view, optical coating or the size of the image reflected in the front mirror. If a broad hairstyle needs to be shown, plan two or three deliberate views. This avoids suggesting that a 25 cm mirror automatically displays every side clearly.

Folding mirror: changing angles

A double folding mirror can suit a presentation where you want a broader visual arrangement. Open the two panels and support the tool by the outer handles. Carefully adjust it in relation to the wall mirror and see whether one or both reflections are useful to the client. Two surfaces can produce different sightlines, but they do not guarantee two simultaneously sharp, undistorted views of the sides of the head.

For longer hair, begin with the centre at the back and the lower cut line. Next, change position to show where that line joins the side hair. With geometric haircuts these transitions can matter more than a large, poorly directed image. Allow several seconds at each position. Moving too quickly mostly produces shifting bright patches and makes it harder to identify individual details.

The folding mechanism introduces a step that Q-35 does not have. You need space to open the mirror, support it throughout the demonstration and close it again when finished. Notice where your fingers are placed and whether the panels move smoothly; avoid putting fingers in the hinge area unnecessarily. The specific product sheet does not claim a drop test or reinforced glass, so do not balance it at the edge of a counter or pile heavy tools on top.

A useful presentation routine

Prepare the workspace before reaching for either mirror. Clear visible cut hairs when appropriate, keep or remove the cape according to your ordinary service sequence and make sure the large mirror is unobstructed. Do not move the chair unexpectedly. Explain that you are about to show the neckline and sides, so the client knows where to direct their attention and how to interpret the reflection.

First show the middle of the back. Hold the mirror behind the head at a distance that makes the image visible through the front mirror; avoid aiming bright lamps into the reflection. Next tilt or move towards one side to show the transition around the ear, then repeat on the other side. With Q-35 this means moving the round mirror itself. With the folding model both its position and the angle between panels may matter; do not force two images into view at once.

Then refer back to the haircut consultation. The client may have requested a lower neckline, a softened transition or a clearly outlined edge. A question such as 'would you like to look at the line above your left ear again?' is more informative than waiting for a compliment. Let the client say when the mirror angle is useful. A presentation should support a conversation rather than elicit a predetermined judgement.

Finally, return the mirror to a stable clean location before picking up cutting tools again. If a detail needs revisiting, interrupt the presentation, correct the area and show the updated result. This keeps the review of the haircut separate from tasks involving sharp instruments or loose hair.

Space, light and storage

The station layout affects which mirror makes sense. A fixed barber chair with a large wall mirror and limited cupboard space may be straightforward to serve with the round version. Another salon may have sufficient width to open two panels without hitting a trolley, light or adjacent chair. Trace the movement of your hand: where does the mirror wait, from which side do you bring it behind the client, and where do you return it?

Lighting changes what can be inspected. Strong glare in the front mirror or behind the customer's head may obscure the neckline. First choose a better viewing angle and adjust existing salon lighting where practical. We do not claim an anti-reflective coating on either exact item; the product specifications do not substantiate one. Similarly, a black frame or a rounded shape tells you nothing definite about measured optical clarity.

Consider everyday scenarios. A station close to a wall may require approaching from one side. For long hair you can hold a section out of the way with a free hand after scissors have been put down. With a short fade, avoid concealing the neckline behind the chair back or cape. None of these settings automatically requires the largest or most expensive solution. The important question is whether a useful line of sight is possible in your actual space.

Storage is particularly relevant to mobile hairdressers. Q-35 is a single round mirror with a handle; the other model folds. Neither description proves that a protective case is included or that the glass will survive a fall. Assign each a protected space away from heavy and sharp tools during transport. If your bag or case has strict dimensions, request the actual exterior measurements of the folded item.

Cleaning and evidence limits

The current listings and the manufacturer's product records confirm the black designs and intended use, but do not provide a verified magnification factor, impact-resistance certification or model-specific list of approved cleaning agents. That does not establish that a feature is impossible; it simply prevents claiming it as a product benefit. Here 'double' refers to the folding design, not special 360-degree rotation or magnification.

Treat both as presentation accessories, not as substitutes for hygiene procedures applicable to equipment that touches skin. Remove visible fingerprints and contamination in a way suitable for the materials and the manufacturer's or supplier's advice. Do not apply an aggressive chemical indiscriminately to the frame or hinges. Chemical resistance cannot be inferred from the general term 'salon mirror'.

From time to time inspect the handles, frame edges and reflective surface. For the folding version also check whether the panels open and close without unexpected resistance. Keep an item with visible damage or a sharp edge out of use until its condition has been assessed. This is ordinary workspace advice, not a claim that either product has passed a particular fall or safety standard.

Choose for the work you do

Choose Q-35 if a single round surface lets you show the neckline and back, you prefer positioning it with one hand and you do not need hinged panels. Consider the double folding model when two surfaces and side grips better suit how you show the transition towards side hair, and folding it closed is important for storage. These are conclusions from design and workflow, not proof of objectively clearer results or increased client satisfaction.

Before placing an order, map one ordinary service. Where do you stand, where does the customer look in the main mirror, which hair areas are shown and how much room is left behind the chair? Will you need a free hand to indicate a section? Answering those practical questions is more reliable than judging solely from photographs or choosing the largest printed dimension.

Compare the current product listings: round Q-35, SKU 133306 and double folding mirror, SKU 133307. The Prohaar mirror collection also lets you compare other designs. The earlier Q-33 UK guide concerns a different double-sided mirror, and does not prove the characteristics of either of these two items.

If exterior folded size, glass type or permitted cleaning agents determine the purchase, request precise information for the relevant model through Prohaar contact. Check current availability and shipping conditions on the product page before buying. This way you choose a mirror for a real stage in the service rather than adding an accessory without a defined location.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a wall mirror as well as a hand mirror?

In the described setup the client looks in the large mirror in front of the chair and sees the second mirror reflecting the back of the head. Without a useful second viewing surface, that same method will not work. Check the layout of the workstation.

Is Q-35 double-sided or magnifying?

The exact description confirms a round Q-35 with a handle below it and a 25 cm diameter. It does not establish two reflective sides or magnification. Do not transfer the features of the separate Q-33 UK model.

Is 21 × 31 cm the fully unfolded size?

The manufacturer gives 21 × 31 cm as the mirror dimension, without unambiguously identifying it as the exterior unfolded size, closed size or individual panel size. Ask for the relevant exterior measurements if a drawer or case must fit.

Can the folding mirror show both sides simultaneously?

Its two hinged panels can offer different sightlines, but whether both images are useful at once depends on their angles and the front mirror. Show left and right separately when necessary.

Is Q-35 useful after a fade or beard trim?

It is intended to show the back of a haircut, so the neckline and transitions near the ears can be presented after a fade. A beard outline at the front of the face will often be visible directly in the main mirror.

Are either of the mirrors unbreakable or magnifying?

Those properties are not confirmed for these exact codes. The name salon mirror does not prove toughened glass, shatter resistance, magnification or a special optical coating. Store and handle the items carefully.

Which model suits a small station?

Choose the round Q-35 if a single surface and lower handle fit your working route. If closing the panels after a service matters more, consider the folding version. Obtain its exterior folded dimensions before assuming it fits a tight drawer.

Quick decision: use Q-35 for a focused, one-handed view of the back of a haircut, or consider the double folding version if two panels and a fold-away design suit your chair and storage. Check both current listings and any dimensions still missing before buying.
