3RL 0.25 vs 0.30 mm: what changes when Long Taper stays the same?

  • 15 min reading time
3RL 0,25 of 0,30 mm: wat vergelijk je bij dezelfde Long Taper-configuratie?

A 3RL cartridge in 0.25 mm and a 3RL cartridge in 0.30 mm look almost identical on a specification sheet when both are El Cartel V2 products and both use Long Taper (RLL). The difference you can verify is the diameter of each individual needle. It is not a change in the number of needles, not a change in taper, and not a predetermined difference in the width of a tattooed line. To choose meaningfully, define the kind of linework you are planning and then compare the exact attributes the supplier actually specifies.

The current Prohaar models are El Cartel V2 0.25 mm 3RL Long Taper, pack of 10 and El Cartel V2 0.30 mm 3RL Long Taper, pack of 10. Both are listed by the manufacturer as V2, 3RL and Long Taper, with ten cartridges per pack. The 0.25 mm model carries product code 147888, EAN 5906717455315; the 0.30 mm model carries 147892, EAN 5906717455353. These identifiers let you make a like-for-like comparison rather than accidentally substituting a different grouping.

The smaller nominal gauge may be worth considering for very detailed work; the 0.30 mm option may suit a preference for a slightly larger individual needle while retaining the same 3RL Long Taper specification. These are selection considerations, not promises about finished line width, pain, skin trauma, healing, ink flow or superior results. The actual appearance also depends on grouping geometry, equipment, pigment, skin and professional execution. This guide explains what can be compared, what remains unproven and which hygiene responsibilities apply to both models.

For the original model specifications, see El Cartel 0.25 mm and El Cartel 0.30 mm. Treat those descriptions as manufacturer specifications, not independent performance tests.

1. Which characteristics stay the same in a fair comparison?

For these specific items, 3RL identifies a three-needle Round Liner configuration. The manufacturer's specifications show needle profile 3, needle type RL and generation V2 on both pages. Both are labelled Long Taper. You are therefore not comparing one needle against three, a Round Shader against a Round Liner, or a medium taper against a long taper. Holding these fields constant is important: otherwise a difference in the way a cartridge is described or selected might be attributed to the wrong feature.

The V2 product presentation uses RLL for the Long Taper version and also lists RLM as Medium Taper. Taper describes the narrowing of the needle towards its point; gauge or diameter describes the thickness of each individual needle. Neither of the two model-specific manufacturer pages provides an exact measured taper length in millimetres. Do not assume that a generic internet statement about a particular taper length has been verified for product 147888 or 147892. Nor should a conventional 3RL designation be treated as interchangeable with separately listed 3 InRow or RL-X configurations.

2. What does a difference of 0.05 mm actually tell you?

0.25 mm and 0.30 mm are nominal diameters of individual needles. The numerical difference is 0.05 millimetres per needle. Mathematically, 0.30 mm is twenty per cent larger than 0.25 mm, but this does not mean the tattoo line will be twenty per cent wider, that twenty per cent more ink will be delivered, or that skin response can be quantified from those figures. Three needles form one working group; their combined footprint is not three times the diameter of one needle. The relative arrangement of their points cannot be calculated from a single gauge value.

In general buying discussions, smaller individual needle diameters tend to be associated with more delicate detail choices. A larger diameter within an unchanged needle count is a different physical starting dimension. However, actual behaviour also depends on point grouping, spacing, ink characteristics, the specific cartridge construction and the working context. The manufacturer has not published, on these two model pages, a controlled side-by-side measurement of finished tattoo line width, delivered pigment volume, friction or tissue injury. We therefore cannot present any of those outcomes as model-specific evidence.

3. Read the entire cartridge description, not only “3RL”

Online filters often abbreviate products to 3RL. That does not tell you everything needed for a purchasing decision. In this pair, V2 denotes the generation, 0.25/0.30 the individual needle diameter, 3 the number in the group, RL the Round Liner type and Long Taper/RLL the taper variant. Each retail pack contains ten cartridges. A product code and an EAN are identifiers for the commercial model; neither proves a specific line width or skin response.

El Cartel describes updates to the V2 family, including a revised housing, a stronger membrane, an improved tip fit and colour-coded identification for certain RL and RS cartridges. Those are manufacturer statements about design, not independent measurements establishing universal machine compatibility, zero backflow under every condition or repeatable clinical advantages. Colour can help recognise a series, but should never take the place of checking the diameter, type and original packaging. Two parts that look alike on a photograph are not necessarily identical in geometry or fit.

This is a comparison of declared specifications, not the result of a test on people or a controlled machine bench. Because count, nominal taper and product family stay constant, the pair is useful for examining a change in gauge. It does not establish that every other microscopic parameter—needle spacing, steel finishing or individual manufacturing tolerances—has been independently measured and found identical. Such comparative test data is not supplied on the two manufacturer product pages.

5. Selection examples based on the design, not a guarantee

Fine details and frequent changes of direction. For a design with small separated elements, narrow gaps, ornamental details or many short curved segments, it makes sense to explicitly ask whether a smaller individual needle diameter should be evaluated within the same 3RL Long Taper family. The 0.25 mm product is a concrete candidate on the basis of its confirmed gauge. It is not proof of a thinner healed line or less tissue reaction. Consider the scale, legibility and overall design as a separate professional question rather than relying on a product label to resolve them.

Continuous contours in a familiar 3RL workflow. An artist may want to keep the same number of needles and taper but choose a slightly greater nominal diameter. In this specific pair, 0.30 mm is the relevant alternative. The dimensional distinction is certain; a claim that it always delivers more ink, works more quickly or produces a predictably thicker line is not established by the manufacturer evidence examined. Keep the selection rationale modest: choosing a different individual gauge while preserving other specified fields.

Overlapping tattoo styles. Fine line, small lettering, dotwork, delicate outlines and illustration are not proprietary uses of either diameter. A style name does not prove an optimal cartridge. Skin area, layout, spacing between visual elements and the desired long-term legibility also require individual assessment. This article is not a clinical skin evaluation or a step-by-step tattoo procedure. It is a purchasing comparison for professionals who already understand the relevant practice requirements and can assess the work itself.

When neither option solves the real question. Perhaps your actual need concerns the needle count, the grouping arrangement or a different taper. Then comparing 0.25 and 0.30 mm within this pair will not answer it. Different three-needle configurations can be sold under additional designations, and a 3 InRow arrangement should not be assumed to be this standard 3RL model. Likewise, a 1RL or 5RL product is not made equivalent to a 3RL merely because the listed diameter is the same. First identify the exact configuration, then decide which single variable is worth comparing.

6. Needle gauge is not the width of the finished tattoo line

This is the central misunderstanding surrounding 3RL 0.25 vs 0.30 mm. Needle diameter is a property of a component; tattoo line width is a process outcome. Three points are arranged into a working group. They do not necessarily leave three separate circles whose diameters can simply be added or converted into a final continuous line. Their exact arrangement and the way the group meets the working surface matter. The publicly available manufacturer listings do not provide a dimensioned drawing of point spacing or a standardised test of inked line widths.

There are also variables not described by the SKU: the selected pigment and its properties, actual equipment behaviour, contact conditions, movement and the way the eventual result is evaluated. The appearance of a fresh tattoo is not the same thing as a fully healed result. A statement that a 0.25 mm needle makes a 0.25 mm line, or that a 0.05 mm gauge difference creates exactly a 0.05 mm difference in a tattoo, would therefore be misleading. The manufacturer has supplied no verified conversion factor for this pair.

7. V2 housing, membrane and machine compatibility

The manufacturer says its V2 range has a reinforced membrane, modified housing and refined needle-tip fit. Both products here belong to that range. These descriptions explain the intended construction; they are not a test report certifying an absolute seal in every possible combination. The Dutch RIVM explanation of NEN-EN 17169 sets out requirements for sterile packaged needle modules and the physical barrier intended to prevent pigment and bodily fluids entering the handpiece. For each received product, verify the actual construction, packaging and instructions instead of substituting a broad marketing statement for compliance checks.

Some store product text makes wide claims that cartridges work with all machines fitted with a cartridge grip. Universal compatibility has not been independently confirmed. Check the cartridge connection, machine manufacturer's instructions, grip and any specific limitations before use. Do not force a part into equipment merely because it resembles another cartridge or belongs to the same series. Retaining 3RL or Long Taper tells you nothing definitive about an unfamiliar machine interface.

8. Hygiene requirements do not depend on gauge

The Dutch RIVM explanation of NEN-EN 17169 is an important primary reference for professional tattoo practice. It describes the use of suitable sterile packaged needle modules, integrated needle and cap, and a physical barrier in the module. It also explains that single-use material must not be used if its packaging is damaged or its shelf-life date has expired. Choosing the smaller gauge does not relax these rules; choosing the larger gauge does not create a different exception.

Before use, check the delivered pack for its actual identity, visible instructions, batch information where provided, sterility marking, expiry date and intact protective packaging. An online statement that the shelf life can be 'up to five years' cannot establish the validity of a particular physical item. The date and conditions stated on the received product are what matter. Open sterile articles according to the applicable instructions. Do not use a cartridge whose packaging status or applicable conditions are unclear. Seek the appropriate product information rather than guessing from a general product description.

The RIVM also states that used needles and needle modules must be discarded immediately into a suitable sharps container. Its Dutch guidance discusses UN-marked containers and correct disposal of hazardous sharp waste. Cleaning or re-sterilising used needles is not an acceptable route to reuse. Consult the official RIVM explanation of NEN-EN 17169 for the complete conditions. The guidance here highlights the requirements relevant to cartridge selection; it does not replace the official standard, local legal obligations or professional studio procedures.

9. A purchasing decision you can actually verify

Then check the physical product and the intended equipment. The SKU identifies the ordered model; package labelling and batch data identify the actual supplied unit. Verify compatibility with the relevant machine and grip documentation, and confirm the hygiene requirements are satisfied. Where a material detail is missing, obtain it from the appropriate manufacturer rather than estimating it from the words 'Long Taper'.

A concise pre-purchase check

  1. Which variable is changing? Only 0.25 versus 0.30 mm; V2, 3RL and Long Taper remain specified in both.
  2. What is the design objective? Describe the intended linework without promising an exact visible result.
  3. Are the identifiers correct? 147888 / 5906717455315 versus 147892 / 5906717455353.
  4. Is the equipment combination documented? Check the machine, grip and cartridge; do not infer universal compatibility.
  5. Is the specific package valid? Confirm the stated sterility, intact condition, batch and expiration markings.
  6. Is the hygiene procedure in place? Single-use handling and correct immediate disposal of used sharp modules.

Frequently asked questions about 3RL 0.25 and 0.30 mm

Is 0.25 mm always a better choice for fine-line tattoos?

No. The smaller gauge is a verified physical attribute that may be relevant to a detail-focused selection. But 'fine line' describes a visual objective rather than a compulsory needle gauge. The final appearance depends on more than this one measurement. Compare the complete cartridge specification and let the professional evaluate the intended design separately.

Does a 0.30 mm cartridge create a line exactly 0.05 mm wider?

No. 0.05 mm is the difference in the diameters of individual needles. There is no supported formula that converts that figure into an identical difference in tattoo line width. Three points in a group and the circumstances of application make that direct conversion unsound.

Is the needle arrangement different between these two items?

The two manufacturer listings describe needle profile 3, RL and Long Taper for both models. They do not designate a different 3 InRow or RL-X construction for this pair. That does not mean all microscopic geometry has been independently measured and established to be identical; the public listings do not supply those measurements.

Does Long Taper mean the needle diameter is smaller?

No. Taper describes the narrowing towards the point, whereas diameter is the individual needle's thickness. Both selected articles are Long Taper; only the stated diameters differ. The manufacturer also distinguishes RLL from RLM, which is a separate taper choice.

Will either cartridge work with every tattoo machine?

Universal fit is not verified. Although El Cartel describes a redesigned V2 housing, you must check the machine and grip instructions and any product-specific restrictions. Do not use a component if the required compatibility information is missing or the connection is unsuitable.

Is a general five-year shelf-life claim enough?

No. Such wording on a sales page does not give the expiration date of the actual pack you receive. Check the physical batch, expiry, sterility marking and package condition. Do not assume a sterile single-use product remains suitable without verifying its actual labelling.

Can a used 3RL cartridge be cleaned and reused?

No. RIVM guidance requires used needle modules to go straight into an appropriate sharps container, and does not permit cleaning and re-sterilising used needles for reuse. The rule is the same for both gauges. Refer to the RIVM primary guidance for the full requirements.

Purchasing conclusion: choose El Cartel V2 3RL Long Taper 0.25 mm if you specifically want the smaller stated individual diameter, or the 0.30 mm version if you want the larger gauge without changing the declared 3RL Long Taper configuration. If you also need to change the needle count or taper, browse the Prohaar tattoo cartridge collection.
